Cleopatra Editorial Makeup

Cleopatra Editorial Makeup

Cleopatra was the Queen of Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt from 51-30 BC and it’s last active ruler. She was known for her seductive and intellectual nature. She was a member of an Ancient Greek dynasty and was highly educated (she spoke 9 languages). There have been so many portrayals of her in movies, music and all forms of art. A true woman of power! I have always been inspired by her and have always been so deeply interested in Egyptian History. Creating this makeup look has always been a dream of mine. I always wanted to create a rendition of Queen Cleopatra’s ICONIC look.

The Egyptian Style of eyeliner was common to be worn by both genders. They used black and green eyeshadows, made out of kohl and malachite. Kohl was used to line the eyes in a cat-like shape. Men and women alike painted kohl around their eyes to make them look larger, protect their eyes from the harsh desert sun and also served as a natural insect repellent. History is just oh so incredible to read!

I had so much fun creating this look. I really wanted to provide some historical context to expand on Cleopatra and some history behind the iconic Egyptian eyeliner.

Who was Cleopatra?

Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator was Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt from 51 to 30 BC, and its last active ruler. A member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, she was a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great.

Why is Cleopatra so famous?

Why is Cleopatra famous? While queen of Egypt (51–30 BCE),

Cleopatra actively influenced Roman politics at a crucial period and was especially known for her relationships with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. She came to represent, as did no other woman of antiquity, the prototype of the romantic femme fatale.

How old was Cleopatra when she met Caesar?

Cleopatra arranges to meet Caesar under intimate terms by having herself rolled up in a carpet that is delivered to Caesar's home quarters. When the carpet was unrolled a vivacious 21 year old Egyptian queen emerges. Caesar was about 52 at the time. Cleopatra captivated him but it was probably not her youth and beauty.

What happened to Egypt after Cleopatra died?

After the death of Cleopatra, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, marking the end of the last Hellenistic-period state in the Mediterranean and of the age that had lasted since the reign of Alexander (336–323 BC).

Some things about Cleopatra are simply fact. That she was of Macedonian-Greek background is beyond doubt.
