Both Men and women applied a mixture of red ochre, carmine, wax or fat. In Ancient Rome applying these toxic ingredients that the lipstick contained  was used throughout the empire to distinguish social class and rank.

Why is red lipstick so attractive?

A study by CHANEL’S  Research and development department and scientists at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, found that wearing red lips can make the wearer look younger and more attractive over time due to “facial contrast”. Below I have included a chart of the various shades of red.
